I am just barely old enough to remember a world where women and guns were hardly ever mentioned in the same conversation. At the time, the firearms space as a hobby or professional pursuit was very heavily dominated by male personalities.
The first time as a new, young, and fresh law enforcement officer that I met a woman who was a shooter I had a hard time hiding my surprise.
She was a Marine, a firearms instructor, a marks-woman on the SWAT team - a very accomplished woman in shooting in a male-dominated environment while still being able to maintain her identity as a woman, a mother, and a wife.
Pleasantly, at one point in my career, she eventually became my supervisor when I was transferred to the Training Division.
I was afforded many opportunities to learn from her as my career developed in the shooting space as an instructor.
I learned many things from her and one thing that stands out is that in teaching subjects that might generate high levels of stress, people might be more receptive to learning and more comfortable during the learning process if they are learning from a person they can more closely relate to.
To state it simply; some female shooters do better with a female source of instruction!
What does this mean for me today, in the civilian firearms space?
I’ve met a lot of women in the past decade who’ve become interested in firearms and shooting, but they don’t know where to start. Luckily, the shooting space has evolved and there are a lot of resources that can be shared to facilitate the growth of women as shooters.
And obviously, one of these valuable resources is female-written blogs - a rich source of information for female shooters written by female shooters!
Below is a list of women-oriented shooting blogs that I recommend to women interested in learning more about shooting.
I feel it’s important to point out that this list isn’t a ranking of these blogs as they all bring different strengths to the firearms space.
The Well Armed Woman
I love this blog for the depth of information it presents, especially for the woman who may just be beginning the journey in the shooting space with the first question; “Is this right for me?”.
The Well Armed Woman breaks the firearm ownership process down from the beginning questions that a person becoming interested in the possibility of introducing a firearm into their life may have, through the selection of the right firearm for them, to what resources are out there for training.
Style Me Tactical
Style Me Tactical catches the eye because it actually brings a sense of style to the female shooting space while sending a message that a woman doesn’t have to compromise who she is to be involved in firearms and self-defense.
On Style Me Tactical, one can find tips and tricks for women interested in shooting as well as relevant product reviews and links to other valuable shooting resources.
Gun Tote'n Momas
The Gun Tote’n Momas blog is an off-shoot of the business by the same name specializing in conceal carry solutions for women.
The GTM blog covers not just their product selections, but many interesting articles dealing with women’s self-defense issues.
On top of that, we love that GTM is a woman-owned business in the USA!
Women’s Outdoor News
Women’s Outdoor News is a wonderful resource not just for information on self-defense issues for women, but also widely covers different aspects of sport shooting.
On top of that, they cover outdoor adventures and lifestyle topics, appealing to a huge segment of women gun owners.
Gun Goddess
The blog at Gun Goddess’s website is absolutely packed with useful information for the woman shooter.
On top of that, Gun Goddess’s “Learning Center” is very well organized with a series of articles covering many aspects of firearm selection, training, and carry.
Girls with Guns Clothing
The blog at Girls with Guns Clothing has a decidedly more lifestyle-oriented feel to it, covering topics like hunting, gear reviews, and fitness.
One section of the blog in particular really drew my attention; “Field to Plate”.
Now I’m hungry!
A Girl and A Gun Shooting League
A Girl and A Gun Shooting League is an organization with representation all across the United States that organizes training and shooting events for women shooters.
A Girl and A Gun offers something for all levels of women shooters to help them elevate their skills in a competitive environment while building a positive community environment.
Front Sight Press is a refreshing departure from the comfortable, cozy blog-sphere in that it tackles 2nd Amendment issues. from an atypical perspective (specifically, a young, black, urban female lawyer who works in academia and also teaches firearms classes).”
I particularly enjoy the author’s style of writing in that she lets her voice come out in her writing, giving a lot more of a human connection from the reader to the author.
Huntress View
Huntress View is the blog destination for women hunters and outdoor enthusiasts! Hunting, product reviews, and game recipes are all covered on the blog.
Huntress View has contributing authors from 22 states and Canada, providing a wide and varied scope of hunting and outdoor-life content.
The Reel Camo Girl
The Reel Camo Girl is yet another phenomenal blog focused on women hunters and outdoor lifestyle. The Reel Camo Girl’s contributors cover topics on hunting, conservationism, product reviews, and wild game prep.
The true passion of the authors for sustainable hunting shows in the articles.
